Republicans to Roll Over for Sotomayor

Debate Continues Ahead of Sotomayor Hearing; GOP unlikely to try filibuster

Sen. John Cornyn, Texas Republican, said he doubts Judge Sotomayor will have a fate similar to another Hispanic nominee to the federal bench, Miguel Estrada, whose confirmation was filibustered by Democrats seven times.
"We're not going to filibuster Judge Sotomayor like the Democrats did Miguel Estrada, who would have been on the Supreme Court, I would have predicted, if he had not been filibustered and denied an up-or-down vote," Mr. Cornyn said on "Fox News Sunday." "I think she'll have an up-or-down vote."

Well, why not? Until the Republicans are willing to play hardball like the Democrats, their nominees will always be dragged throught the gutter and the Dems will face absolutely no consequences.

U. of Oregon Faculty Liberal, Obnoxious

http://www.csmonitor.com/2009/0713/p09s02-coop.html

The University of Oregon (UO), where I study journalism, invested millions annually in a diversity program that explicitly included "political affiliation" as a component. Yet, out of the 111 registered Oregon voters in the departments of journalism, law, political science, economics, and sociology, there were only two registered Republicans.

Race Riot in Akron

Tip of the hat to Northern Muckraker

"Akron police say they aren't ready to call it a hate crime or a gang initiation.

But to Marty Marshall, his wife and two kids, it seems pretty clear.

It came after a family night of celebrating America and freedom with a fireworks show at Firestone Stadium. Marshall, his family and two friends were gathered outside a friend's home in South Akron.

Out of nowhere, the six were attacked by dozens of teenage boys, who shouted ''This is our world'' and ''This is a black world'' as they confronted Marshall and his family.

The Marshalls, who are white, say the crowd of teens who attacked them and two friends June 27 on Girard Street numbered close to 50. The teens were all black."

etc.

Analysis: If this is not prosecuted as a hate crime, it seems clear that non-whites are considered legally immune to hate-crime legislation. Marshall spent 5 days in critical care at the hospital, and has no insurance.

MRC Collects Media Palin-bashes

Media Research Center has collected almost a year's worth of MSM Palin attacks onto one handy webpage. My favorite is Bill Maher summing up the Andrew Sullivan theory of Trig-trutherism:

"I’m not that convinced that that’s her baby....The daughter — who we know is fertile because she’s knocked up again, or maybe for the first time...she did like take a five-month leave from high school because she had [uses fingers to indicate quote marks] ‘mononucleosis’ right around the time the baby was being born. And the mother, the so-called, you know, okay, maybe it is the mother, but, you know, she was back to work three days later. You don’t smell something?...It’s not like they’re not willing to lie about everything else."

Duke University Rape Case II

Courtesy of Stop the ACLU

A professor of criminology at Duke is accused of molesting his five year old adopted son on a webcam and offering the son to others for sexual use on the internet.
In sharp contrast to the Duke LaCrosse rape case, when numerous faculty opined publicly about the University's culture, collegiate athletic culture, and American culture in general, in this case the faculty is minding its own business.

Sarahcuda Resigns Alaska Governorship

WSJ: Palin to Resign as Alaska Governor
Questionable decision. By resigning in her last year, she has really boxed herself in. She pretty much has to run for the White House in 2012. Despite her troubles in AK, she was still popular and probably would have been reelected. She could have run for Senate and built up her national resume, let Mitt Romney take the fall in 2012 if things looked bad for the GOP. She's only 45! While the predictions that her political career is over are premature, this is a huge gamble.
Somebody who lets Katie Couric make her look stupid is not ready.
